It’s not friendly, but it’s where I lay up…

With the release of What a Time To Be Alive – Drake and Future have added another notch to their rapid fire campaign of content into the hip hop market. Drake has been more strategic than ever lately, with this mixtape controlling the top of the charts, and his unrelated single Hotline bling, holding the #1 position on iTunes singles – while everyone continues to salivate for Views of the 6 – his upcoming release that has been building buzz for years now (or so it seems...).

This mixtape was released exclusively to Apple Music for a couple weeks, managing to rack up over 25m streams, before going live to Spotify and all the other outlets. Spotify has been responding to these exclusivity agreements, with the same effectiveness as it had when dealing with TaylorSwift, which is unfortunate. Spotify did have a good head start before Apple got into the market, locking down a lot of smart people (see linkedin for an expensive group of Ivy leaguers and ex-consultants), but we still see the music landscape continuing to fragment, which could actually be a good thing?

As I listen to OVOSound Radio on Beats1, (which Drake is getting paid 19 million annually), he clearly has bought into Apple and their business model for music. At this point Drake is a business himself, with many more ventures than just music. To start, the man has more partnerships than a Nascar driver, with product and companies named in his music taking him to the next level in terms of endorsements (call your ass an uber I got somewhere to be / I get boxes of free Jordans like I play for North Carolina / I avoided the coke game, went with Sprite instead / I just got me the Mercedes Pullman, if you haven’t heard about it you should hit up Google / I pull the knife out my back and cut they throat with it momma, I'm Game of Thrones with it momma / Versace Versace Versace, etc.).

All of this is exciting, but it is nothing like what he has done for Toronto. In my time, I have never seen a city rebranded like this – moving from the street name effectively moving from T.Dot to the 6ix in less than a year. The content marketing strategy he has is unrivaled, even in the corporate world. The level of community that he can bring with things like OVOBounce, OVOfest, Nomad, section 416 at the Air Canada Centre is ridiculous, and if this isn’t a case study on how to capitalize on popularity I don’t know what is. He took this to the next level with the beef with Meek Mill – putting the city behind him (with meme’s at OVOfest) – and delaying him at the border, to prove that Toronto can stand up. On top of this, being the Global Ambassador for the Toronto Raptors has improved his position and the team’s – allowing him to solidify his credibility in the scene, and letting MLSE truly launch the We the North campaign with almost guaranteed results.

In the last couple of years Drake (and supporting cast) has put Toronto on the map, and while 'Merica is a different beast, if Kanye can be President, it’s safe to say Drake can be at least Mayor of the 6.

The Melker Project Presents: The Skeetles

Also known as Johnny Cashin' Out, Skeetwood Mac, Booty Huxtable, Stevie Tricks, A$AP Scotty, Ballin' Oats, Trill Collins, Melkradamus, Melka Flocka Flame, Ricky Exit-Row-Zay, and Lil Yung Melks--The Melker Project is a remix artist based out of New York.  After the widespread success of Steetwood Mack (10,000 downloads in a week),  Skeetles is the second release in a series of EPs by The Melker Project, where a classic artist is brewed with some modern hip-hop flavour.   The Beatles are the choice feature in this edition.  The Don't Let Me Down mashup with Biggie is what sparked my attention, but the timeless sound of the Beatles provides a solid groundwork for some rap influence.   Features include Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Jay-Z, Three 6 Mafia, A$AP Rocky, Nas, and others. Toss the guy a like on his Facebook for the full download.

Omen- Afraid of Heights Mixtape

Now-a-days I feel rap has become utterly faddy. Whether it is the electro influence that has come to consume pretty much all pop and a majority of new rap, some sort of dark wolf gang ish or of course the ever popular frat rap. As rap fans we have become consumed with these catchy forms of hip-hop. But for me rap has always been about one thing... passion. Being able to feel that the topic an artist is speaking about is the God's honest truth makes connecting to the music much easier.  Whether they are spitting real life shit or conveying passion through the art of story telling, sometimes I need some substance as opposed to fancy beats.

I've know this Omen character simply as one of J.Coles extended crew. With the release of " Afraid of Heights" listeners are able to get a feel for what Omen's all about. Have I completely dissected the album... of course not, I'm a student... I ain't got time for that shit, But I have found of couple of gems and would definitely suggest giving the album a go. Are you gonna find any friday night bangers... No, but  your definitely in store for some crafty lyricism... enjoy.

Tayyib Ali "Keystone State of Mind Mix-Tape"

Since hearing the single "Keystone State of Mind" a while back I was instantly addicted to the chilled out Cali feel of Tayyib Ali. The kids only 18, has some damn smooth lyricism and the dope ability to mix new-school and old-school songs together to make his mix-tape flow like an album. The mix-tape game isn't the same anymore, artists actually put some effort in now-a-days as tapes like Tayyib's Keystone State of Mind are put together like actual albums. One of my favorites from the tape is "Do It" that has a classic hip-hop sample feel that allows Tayyib to spit his easy going Cali flow over ever so nicely. Along with the classic feelin' tracks, the kid also goes hard on the up-beat Xv-ish sounding track "I'm Ready" and "Never Change" has been absolutely destroying my Itunes in the last couple days.   These are just a few of my favorites but the tape features some excellent summer tracks... so cop that shit and get ready for some summer living (free download from datpiff.com below).

Notorious B.I.G. Big L, Big Pun - "New York Royalty"

As I post music that's been shared with me recently I instantly think of a mixtape that a buddy of mine showed me a few years back that's been able to stay as a staple in my collection. This throwback mixtape, New York Royalty, doesn't have much coverage on the internet, but it is not one that should be missed by any serious hip-hop head. The post humorous reproduction by The Usual Suspect offers a collaboration of the works of Big L, Big Pun, and Notorious B.I.G when they were in their prime, and the combination gives us a glimpse of what could have went down if the rap industry wasn't so hard in the 90's. This concept was actually meant to be created into an album by the artists themselves, but due to certain career ending events in the lives of Biggy and Big L it never saw the light of day. This tape gives us some new production to hear who the real kings of New York are though, and i'd start my listening at New York Royalty, Too High, or Everyday Struggle and go from there.

Introducing: Guy Harrison "3am Visions"

As I sit here studying I unfortunately force my self to listen to music with no words in it. During this time in the library,  I like to give myself a musical break from time to time. The song that has been giving me some quality mental health happiness is "3am Vision" by Guy Harrison. I don't really know anything about the rapper currently attending Syracuse University but this beat is amazing and the kid flows over it ever so nicely. I see some potential in the kid, so jam "3am Vision" or try and find some other jams on his "The Deadline" mix-tape that is available to listen and download for free below.

G-Eazy- "The Outsider" Mix-Tape

snows melting, sun is shining, and before I enter the library for the rest of my weekend I'm gonna thoroughly enjoy bumping some new G-Eazy on my walk to school. The new mix-tape features two of my favorite oldies "Waspy" and "My Life Is a Party" but also adds some absolute jams to the mix. As I write this blog and try to decide which songs are best, the amount of talent on "The Outsider" has got me legitimately torn. Despite his whiteness and corny name, the kid has got a unique sound and lyrical abilities that let him spit on a wide variety of beats. The substance of the lyrics is obviously not driven by any thing other than some Mary J and liquor sauce but thats what separates rap from any other genre. Rappers either tell a story of the life they wanna live or like G-Eazy give us a little insight into the Dream life their currently experiencing. To some, the antics of this youngen may seem irresponsible but when I go to have a brew on the porch I wanna escape into the relaxation presented on "The Outsider" mix-tape.

Introducing: Tayyib Ali "Keystone State of Mind"

No I did not mistakingly misspell Talib Kweli... the names Tayyib Ali and he's a teen rapper from Philly with some nasty flow. A old friend of mine recently sent me his most recent track "Keystone State of Mind" which puts his lyrical talent on a pedestal as he rips the smooth How To Make It In Americaish beat. As I sit trapped in the hell they call the library I wish I could have a "Keystone State of Mind", better yet a Keystone or 7 in my belly. I hear a little immaturity in his rhymes but when I was 18 I couldn't make KD, so let the kid mature. The fact that he's a young rapper who's not rapping about getting drunk and high is pretty refreshing in hip-hop's current state of "Frat Rap" (not that I don't enjoy it). Thanks to Fabs Disorono out in Guelph for introducing the unreal talent that is Tayyib Ali.

Mac Miller - "Best Day Ever"

Mac Miller released his latest album, Best Day Ever, last night live on his usteam account to over 20,000 viewers. The kids been building his popularity in the industry really well, and this free album will only help him grow his reputation in the music game. We've been waiting on this for a while, getting stoked on the early leaks, as well as In The Air, a track Miller let slip early in the Toronto show. This album doesn't disappoint, featuring great flow and hooks in particular from Miller, over a selection of production that he adapts to nicely. Have a listen to the full album below & download it for free. Key your listening to to Get Up, Keep Floatin (featuring Wiz Khalifa), & Best Day Ever (bonus) for best results.

Embrace The "Frat Rap" with The Deans List "The Drive In Mix-Tape"

"My Chuck Taylor habits got me spitten Converses"

How all these college kids in the Americaland manage to start and maintain rap careers has always amazed me. Following in the footsteps of artists like Chiddy Bang and Sam Adams, The Deans List embrace their drunken college lifestyles while making beats and writing rhymes. As most of these "Frat Rap" artists tend to have a drink or ten from time to time there is a lot of electro influenced production from deans list beat maker Mike Beats but the boys also maintain their hip-hop roots through DJ Mendoza. Could this be attributed to their party lifestyle, very possible but the album also features some eclectic rhyming from rapper Sonny Shottz. As rap lyrics have always been centered around personal experience, the fact that these youngens are still living the college dream should not discredit the fact that the Boston trio have a legitimate future in hip-hop. The Drive In Mix-tape was sponsored by Karmaloop.com and does not disappoint as a collective project, the fact that its free below is just a bonus... enjoy

My personal favorites are party jam "La Vie" (The Life), "No Sleep", and "The People"

SonReal- "Where's Waldo Mix-Tape"

"Got that slow flow callin' me the West coast Drizzy
With a swag like Cudi and grind like Diddy
                                              Motha flocka i'm ill"

Sometimes life throws some crazy shit your way, and thats been the definition of my week thus far. but last night I got to enjoy the Awesomeness of Mac Miller live in Toronto and for the last couple days I've had the luxury of jamming some brand new SonReal. Whenever I get some new music from the Canadian rapper all those responsibles seem to take a back seat. When I saw the teaser video for this mix-tape, I was nothing but jacked up. The video featured a snippet of the intro track "Showtime" that has SonReal spit one of the most stellar intro lines to an album i've heard in a while. With any SonReal album there's going to be some drake-esk singing but Van cities own does not disappoint on the hook by any means. My personal favorites from the tape so far  "#1 Fan"and "Clap For Me" but you guys can choose your own...

Chip Tha Ripper- Gift Raps

Whatup March. As promised, here's Chip's full mixtape, entitled Gift Raps. Some kick-back and relax rap. Nice synthy-feel to the production. The mixtape is produced almost entirely by Chuck Inglish (Cool Kids), and it shows. And if you don't feel the need to have 13 tracks by Chip on your iTunes, some highlights from the mixtape are Life, Light One Up, Hang Out, and Everyday Chillin--but make your own judgment:

Rockie Fresh- "The Otherside Mix-Tape"

Rockie Fresh came up on my radar a little while ago when i posted his song "Living". I liked the fact that he sounded like Kidz In The Hall rapper Naledge and proved himself as the two completed the song "Living" together. With instant credibility placed on the kid, I patiently waited for his "Otherside Mixtape" to come out. Well, the wait is over and the record did not disappoint! In the video for the single "What's The Hurry" Rockie gives fans a little perspective into the future of his career and life, along with proving that he can intellectually rhyme. I like these rappers who talk about their days in college, bettering themselves... instead of talking about there lack of attention span when it comes to educating their minds. I'm all for stoner or gangster rap but sometimes you gotta listen to positive Hip-Hop that promotes you to do something that doesn't involve Xbox. Rockie features an array of artists on the mix-tape, one of them being G.O.O.D music singer Mr. Hudson. Hudson has is an obvious Brit but has a pretty insane voice that goes good on rap tunes.

Wale - More About Nothing Mixtape

Two days ago Wale released the follow-up mixtape to 2008's Mixtape About Nothing. Wale has joined my list of MC's who I think make better material on their mixtapes than they do on their albums. Also on the list: B.o.B., Wiz Khalifa, Drake... etc. More About Nothing is a sweet mixtape and has a lot of lines that actually made me laugh out loud when I first heard them. Throughout the mixtape Wale sprinkles in random quotes from Seinfeld that are pretty funny and fit the songs perfectly. The one thing that has always confused me a little bit about Wale is his choice of artists to collaborate with. Waka Flocka and Black Cobain? Really?? I don't know, they just don't seem to mesh with Wale's flow/content to me. Anyways, check out the songs if you're not familiar with Wale's stuff (where have you been?)

Chiddy Bang - Air Swell

Whats up people, the "staff" here at straight goods has been ridiculously busy over the past week or so which caused us to miss the release of Chiddy Bang's mini-mixtape Air Swell which dropped a couple days ago. Its got a 7 song track list including a couple songs we've had on straight goods before (Stylo Remix, Under the Sheets) and some new stuff. I'm not even going to post sample songs from the mixtape for this one because if you know what's good for you, you'll download this FREE mixtape as soon as you see this blog. Props to ScottyQ for the heads up

New B.o.B. Mixtape

Bobby Ray a.k.a. B.o.B. released his newest mixtape May 25th today. If the title seems weird, his album The Adventures of Bobby Ray drops May 25th.. get it?? Tricky eh? The mixtape is presented by The Affiliates, Grand Hustle, LRG, DJ Drama and DJ Sense so guess what that means.. we get to hear the DJ's yell their name over top of pretty much every song's intro! For me, nothing ruins a mixtape faster than hearing "DJ DRAMA.. drama.. drama.." at the start of every song, but I guess you can't complain too much about free music.

The mixtape itself is solid though.. overall I thought the songs produced by B.o.B. were the best ones on the release.
